Cat acne

Do you know? Cats can also suffer from acne. Pimples on cat are small, hard and black in color. Usually cat acne is on the chin, but it can also be on other parts of the face. This acne is made of soft material (sebaceous) that is trapped in the hair follicle, then causes the follicle to swell and protrude and then arise to the skin surface.

Why can cats suffer from acne? It is not yet known exactly what causes cat acne, but some of the trigger factors can be known. Those factors are reduced frequency of hair care, old age, and weakening of the cat immune system.

Generally, cat acne is not dangerous, but it will be painful for cats if any bacteria begin to infect them. The cat will scratch the infected part, consequently the skin will be injured. Do not let the wound widen, treat immediately so as not to cause serious effects.

How to handle cat acne? Here are tips that can be done alone by the owner of the cat.

Clean the uninfected cat acne spots

Wet the cotton with alcohol and wipe the cat’s chin. Do it twice a day until the acne disappears. If the acne is infected and the skin is injured, do not use alcohol. You can use a wound medicine to heal the wound first.

Bathe the cat with a special shampoo

Use a shampoo that contains benzyl peroxide that can overcome cat acne because it absorbs into the follicle. This substance will cleanse the follicles, destroy bacteria, and get rid of excess oil that causes acne.

Use a solution of warm water and salt

If there are no special medicines, you can also use hot water dicapur with a teaspoon of salt. Use cotton, squeeze, and press on the acne-pricked chin. Do it for 5 minutes. This warm compress can reduce the size of the spots and break them.

Give antibiotics as directed by pet doctor

If the cat acne does not heal, bring the cat to the vet. The doctor will examine and give antibiotics that the cat needs. Vet may prescribe oral antibiotics to kill bacteria on the surface of the skin. The drug is taken through mouth with the recommended dose until the acne spots are clean and then the use of the drug is extended for at least another week.

Prevent cat acne

Although older cats are most likely to have acne problems (usually because of the problem of arthritis they experience so much trouble taking care of the feathers and getting rid of leftovers from their chins), there are several things you can do to reduce the likelihood of acne.

If your cat has a history of acne, wipe his chin after he eats and dry the chin. This is done to prevent the accumulation of oil and bacterial infections from food trapped within the hair follicle. Clean the cat food bowl. It prevents bacteria from accumulating on the bowl that can contribute to the problem of cat acne.
