Acne is a condition in which the skin pores are clogged causing inflamed pus pockets. A possible cause is hormonal changes that stimulate the oil glands in the skin. Hormonal changes that can trigger acne are puberty, menstruation period, pregnancy, and stress. There are also some other factors contribute to acne appearance, they will be reviewed below.
Acne Cause Factors
Now that we know acne definition, we will review the factors that cause acne to appear. The exact cause of acne is not yet known, but there are various factors known to be associated with this disease:
- Stress Factor
Stress does not directly cause acne. The problem is, there are certain hormones that come out when a person is stressed, which allows the growth of acne. Not only that, stress makes the person has a diet that tends to consume lots of sweet and fatty foods, as “escape” from stress, that in turn, increased the possibility of acne appearance.
- Hormonal Factor
One of the important factors that cause acne is the increased production of testosterone inside the body. Testosterone present in both male and female body triggers acne by stimulating the oil glands (sebaceous glands) to produce excess skin oil (sebum).
- Overly Active Oil Glands
Acne does not only appear because of dirty skin condition but rather caused by factors from within the body. Acne is an abnormal condition of the skin due to excessive production of oil glands (sebaceus gland) which causes blockage of the hair follicle channel and skin pores.
- Hereditary or Genetic Factor
Genetics is a contributing factor to acne that is a derivative of a parent. When parents get acne, the child will also have the same condition as the parents where oil glands activity is more productive, so acne will be very easy to arise, such cases are very rare but if there is such a case is the most difficult to treat.
- Lifestyle Factor
Unhealthy lifestyle becomes one of the factors of acne. People who like to drink alcohol, smokers, have less rest, and stress, tend to have increased androgen hormones. Androgens can increase the production of oil glands, so when the lifestyle is not healthy then the oil glands activity increases. Then the oil can be clogged, especially if on the skin surface covered by make-up, it will become inflamed and become acne.
- Food and Drug Factor
It cannot be denied that the cause of all diseases stems from what we consume. Consuming too many fatty foods and foods with high sugar content such as ice cream is also the cause of acne appearance. Similarly, taking drugs such as corticosteroids, both oral drugs, and topical medications, resulting in a decreased immune system, also increases the potential for acne due to increased pathogenic bacterial activity.
- Environmental factor
Pollution, improper use of cosmetics plus an unhealthy lifestyle such as smoking, irregular sleep can lead to acne.
- Bacterial Factor
Usually, because of the lack of maintaining the cleanliness of our body, bacteria called p.acne will multiply by breeding in the skin, these bacteria multiply in glands called sebaceous that clogged and cause irritation on the skin.
Acne treatment needs to consider the factors above because acne can reappear if the above factors are not controlled properly. Acne treatment requires patience, diet control, the habit of cleaning the face and body, stress control and so on.
Basically, to treat acne is to reduce skin oil production, fight bacterial infections, accelerate cell turnover and reduce inflammation. Treatment may include external treatment as well as medication. Most acne medicines will not deliver results within the first 4-6 weeks.
To treat acne there are several types of drugs that are often used such as antibiotic, retinoid acid, benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid. But sometimes after a long treatment and changing drugs, the results shown are not optimal, especially for some cases of very severe acne and sometimes it does not heal.
Acne treatment by skin dermatologist also requires a relatively long period of time and requires patience. The doctor will analyze your skin first to determine skin type, acne type, and allergic reactions. Then the doctor will choose and perform the procedure necessary to treat the acne and also choose the type of drug and concentration or strength appropriate for your skin condition.
It is recommended not to change the doctor who is treating you because the treatment of acne skin does take time so need monitoring and patience. If you keep changing doctors, then every new doctor will usually start treatment from scratch again.
It is important to note that, apart from outside drugs or medicines consumed, you should also pay attention to diet and facial hygiene. Choose a soap that contains lipids as a moisturizer, because it will be very useful for skin health.
Those are a brief review of acne definition, the factors that causing it and some basic treatment tips. Hopefully, it will be useful as a knowledge addition to understanding acne better.
